In a stunning NCAA tournament showdown, Dylan Darling sealed a dramatic 67-65 victory for St. John's over 4-seed Kansas with a last-second layup.
With the score tied and only 3.9 seconds remaining, Darling, despite a game full of missed shots, drove to the basket and made the game-winning play. His teammates erupted, and the crowd at Benchmark International Arena went wild.
“I just heard everybody going crazy,” Darling reflected after his unforgettable moment. Though Coach Rick Pitino barely reacted to the layup, Darling's teammates mobbed him in celebration. It was a remarkable conclusion to a game that saw St. John's lose a 14-point lead.
Darling's Confidence in the Moment
What made this moment even more extraordinary was Darling's confidence despite struggling throughout the game. Before the final shot, Darling had missed all four of his attempts. Yet, with the clock winding down, he walked up to Pitino and suggested running a play specifically for him. Pitino, initially surprised, couldn't help but admire Darling's boldness.
“Did you say that?” Pitino asked. Darling, full of confidence, replied, "I did. That was me." Pitino responded with, “Irrational confidence.” Darling's audacity was enough to turn the game in St. John's favor, as the final play went exactly as he envisioned.
A Tough Game, But Hopkins' 3s Keep St. John's Alive
While Darling was the hero at the end, it was senior forward Bryce Hopkins who kept the Red Storm in the game. Hopkins hit a career-high six 3-pointers, leading the team with 18 points. Pitino had repeatedly urged Hopkins to keep shooting from beyond the arc, knowing that 3-point shooting was essential to St. John's chances against the bigger Jayhawks.
Pitino credited Hopkins for his confidence, especially after struggling for much of the season with long-range shooting. The Red Storm, historically known for their defense, relied heavily on Hopkins' unexpected sharpshooting to hold off Kansas.
Defense and Teamwork Lead the Way
As Pitino reflected on the win, he emphasized that defense was still their primary strength, even with the shooting success. “We win with our defense,” Pitino said, pointing to their remarkable ability to hold opponents under 70 points in nine of their last 10 games.
For Darling, the victory was deeply personal. It marked his first Sweet 16 appearance with St. John's, and as the team celebrated, he shared a heartfelt moment with his mother, who had traveled from Spain to witness his triumph.
“This is for her and my dad. He's watching up there,” Darling said, his eyes filled with emotion. His mother, Beatriz Campos, had made great sacrifices, including working long hours to support Darling and his brother. Darling's resilience on the court was a tribute to her.
A Historic Moment for St. John's
The win was monumental for St. John's, sending them to their first Sweet 16 since 1999. For Pitino, this victory was a significant step forward in his mission to elevate the program to new heights. "We're not done yet," he said with confidence, as the Red Storm look to continue their tournament run.
St. John's next challenge will be another tough opponent, but with the confidence of Darling's clutch shot, they head into the next round with renewed energy and optimism.
